As a child I would spend hours looking through my family’s photo albums: my parents in college with their 70s styles, the photos magenta-tinted with age; their wedding album with my young grandparents, and uncles with sideburns and cummerbunds; my big brother as a chubby little baby with oatmeal all over his face; round-faced toddler me carrying my rainbow bright and always dressed in sweatpants. Always. Sweatpants. I can still bring to mind exact photos from these albums. They helped define my place in the world and gave me my identity. I am a daughter, a little sister, a granddaughter, a niece, a great-granddaughter, a step-sister, a step-daughter, and now I am also a wife and a mother. These family photos helped to solidify my memories and allow for the retelling of stories to the new generation. My obsession with these far-from-perfect photos has molded the way I approach my art. I want our photos to evoke emotions rather than portray perfect smiles, memories of a real life. The family stories we want to remember and retell.
